Green Starts With Akron

Clean Up Akron Week 2009/Great American CleanupTM

Akron-Ohio (March 2, 2009) - Americans now more than ever want to do their part to improve not only their own community but our planet as well. Keep Akron Beautiful is reminding Akron residents that Green Starts Here, with each volunteer and group that joins us to participate in Keep America Beautiful's Great American CleanupTm .

"For each of our millions of volunteers nationwide, "green" starts with his or her decision to help clean up the local park or the abandoned building lot, or the community garden or any of the hundreds of sites across the country where volunteers work to better the community" said Matthew McKenna, president and CEO of Keep America Beautiful. Locally, Keep Akron Beautiful relies on the national sponsors listed below for the supplies and media support necessary for orchestrating this environmental public awareness campaign.

This year, Keep Akron Beautiful is working to recruit thousands of civic-minded volunteers to adopt a public parcel of land to clean during the 28th Clean Up Akron Week, which will be April 18-25th, 2009. They will be joined by the estimated 3 million volunteers who will get involved and let "green" start with them by participating in over 30,000 community improvement activities and workshops in over 17,000 communities nationwide. Last year in Akron, 2,743 citizens registered to clean 119 sites of 7.08 tons of litter and 3,275 students from 35 public and private schools joined in the event and cleaned their school campuses!

We want every church, neighborhood block watch group and volunteer organization to get registered now to tackle eyesores in their own backyards and to restore a sense of pride and ownership in their local environments.

For this one week, Keep Akron Beautiful will provide cleanup supplies for FREE and arrange for FREE disposal. Call 330 375-2116 to get a registration form or register online at http://www.keepakronbeautiful.org.

Clean up Akron Week is about spreading the message of individual responsibility to keep Akron clean, green and beautiful. We are asking you to devote a few hours from your busy lifestyle to transform your neighborhood into a cleaner, safer and healthier place to live and work.

Keep America Beautiful, Inc., established in 1953, is the nation's largest volunteer-based community action and education organization. This national nonprofit forms public-private partnerships and programs that engage individuals to take greater responsibility for improving their community environments. Its signature program, the Great American Cleanup, is one of its many programs that encourage people to care for communities through volunteer participation.
