AKRON an All American City again!
From Wikipedia
"The All-America City Award is given by the National Civic League annually to ten cities in the United States. The
award is the oldest community recognition program in the nation and
recognizes communities whose citizens work together to identify and
tackle community-wide challenges and achieve uncommon results.Since the
program's inception in 1949, more than 4,000 communities have competed and over 500 have been named All-America Cities"
Akron has won three times now! 1981,1995 and NOW 2008 !!! There were only nine others and Akron was the only one in Ohio.
Each competitor has to submit projects in the community that enhance 'civic life'. Akron's submissions were:
The
rebuilding of the city schools as Community Learning Centers, a joint
venture by the Akron Public Schools and the Urban League, the creation
of the Akron Global Business Accelerator (a conversion of the Akron
Industrial Incubator) and the after school program, Activities Center.
Congratulations Akron!!
